What is a "General Counsel"?
A salaried attorney who manages risk and who hopefully does not impede revenue generation unnecessarily as the "point" of business is revenue generation, not risk avoidance.

Why hire a General Counsel?
To make sure your counsel is intimately familiar with your company as you'll never remember to tell your counsel everything and your counsel will never ask you all the right questions. Also, a general counsel is supposed to save you money by reducing legal fees.

What should a General Counsel do?
A GC should have certain work performed in-house and other work performed by a specialist - similar to how a primary care physician should operate.

What should a General Counsel know?
The GC should have broad experience, be competent in many areas of the law and know when to bring in a specialist. Technology GCs need to be well versed in intellectual property
